      About this Artwork

      The name means 'the caves', perhaps referring to the nearby sandstone quarries from the Roman era. The whole coast, moreover, is surrounded by sandstone rocks, giving the feeling of a desert. The facing island of Mal di Ventre, a naturalistic oasis with an unusual shape where sea turtles nest and in whose abysses are hidden wrecks from every era, including one from the 1st century AD, enhances the view. Perhaps from the erosion, over hundreds of millions of years, of the porphyritic granite of the islet - originally a mountain, when the sea level was lower than the present - derives the genesis of is Arutas and the two nearby 'twin' beaches. : to the north Mari Ermi, to the south Maimoni, also made of tiny fragments of quartz mixed with light sand.
